Convert landscape video to vertical 9:16
You have a horizontal (16:9) video and need a vertical clip for TikTok, Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts. Millwards Studio does this in your browser: upload your own video, trim the hook, choose a vertical layout, and export. Your video stays on your device unless you choose a Pro export.
How to convert landscape to vertical in 3 steps
- Upload your video. Open Millwards Studio and choose Upload video. MP4, MOV or WebM up to 1 GB.
- Trim the hook. Drag the clip handles to pick the moment that matters. Captions and safe zones are shown for 9:16.
- Export vertical. Choose 9:16 (Shorts) in the ratio tabs and render. Free exports are 720p WebM in the browser; Pro gives a 1080p MP4 with no watermark.
Crop or pad: the two trade-offs
- Fill (crop). Zooms in so the frame is full vertical. Nothing is letterboxed, but the sides of the original are cut off. Best when the subject is centred.
- Fit (pad). Keeps the whole landscape frame and adds blurred or solid bars top and bottom. Nothing is cut, but it looks smaller on a phone.
Before and after
A 16:9 frame (1920 x 1080) becomes a 9:16 frame (1080 x 1920). Millwards Studio reframes in the browser; subject-aware reframe is a Pro feature after AI analysis.
FAQ
Is it free?
Yes. Trimming and 720p browser exports are free. Pro (1080p MP4, no watermark, AI tools) is £12 per month.
Does it upload my video?
No. Editing and free exports stay in your browser. Server-side Pro exports use a protected, temporary render that is removed afterwards.
Can I do square (1:1) too?
Yes. The ratio tabs switch between 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9.
